As I‘ve read many people before, I found Pattberg at Substack at one of my darkest times. He was a mysterious writer and wrote what sounded incredible and from another world. Thank you for the journey!

I don’t find it so bad. Everyone gets what they want girls get money men get sex. What’s the issue? Women who don’t like it get foreigners. But also women who really don’t like sex can be fine allowing their husbands to do what they want

Are unhappy marriages more common in China than the West? Or less common? Just wondering.

In all my years, I have yet to see a happy marriage. East, West, same hell.

Actually, I suspect that the “Chinese culture “ you refer to is the culture of the cities. The villages were quite different. Read Pearl Buck’s The Good Earth for a different view.

How could there not be a "mister" culture if women are paid to sleep with men? Female polyandry (prostitution) is everywhere more widespread than male polygyny.

I live in Wuhan, have a Chinese (university professor) wife, and the pragmatic and practical approach by women to these relationships is somewhat refreshing to this Westerner. The unwritten rules are apparently "keep it to yourself". Chinese women (big generality here) understand men in ways that Western women (again, generality) do not. The human species has encased itself in dogma and religiously enforced mores that, if history is any indicator, have little or nothing to do with how humans actually are. This, of course, sets off alarm bells and knee jerk reactions about impact on children, society, family, and every other thing that I have no particular opinion on.

Great piece. Thanks much.

Thanks so much for your enthusiasm! Much appreciate. Chinese (university professor) wives can be very bossy. Don't get thrown under the coffee table! ;) All the best, Kurt! We stay in touch! I salute you! T
