The year 2023 is going to be tough for Western “China Studies”. Oh boy, those tinsel scholars and fakeologists had it coming for so long, haha!

I apologize to the community for the lack of any new or original insights in Translation Studies. The Analects of Confucius is a relatively short text, and the role of the sages in the Analects has been studied from every conceivable angle by all groups, factions and even entire states - culturally, politically and philosophically.

Writers often translate foreign names and concepts in order to appeal to their readers who understandably read through their sensitive eyes of schooling, believe systems and certain key words I am sure they expect from us.

Nonetheless, despite all our best efforts, and  over the last 350 years, we haven’t managed to replace the shengren. It still stares right back at us, through all those inconsistent, controversial and sometimes anormal translations. The problem does not go away, because it cannot go away.

The shengren is unique and untranslatable, and unless we stop translating it, we are only torturing ourselves.

The shengren is a shengren!
